An introduction to me and the whole reason behind creating this travel journal.

The dictionary defines capricious as:

ca·pri·cious (/kəˈpriSHəs,kəˈprēSHəs/) adjective 1. given to sudden and unaccountable changes of mood or behavior.

Synonyms include: unpredictable, whimsical, temperamental, random and mercurial (and those are the nicer adjectives).

Here’s why I resonate so well with the word Capricious.

Good or bad, at my core I’m a Capricious being. As a Capricorn, it’s a part of our makeup (Capricious/Capricorn get it?)

Capricorns are often represented by the steadfast mountain climbing goat as well as the mythical, mysterious sea-goat. Which makes total sense to me with my sometimes extreme ways.

I’m sure we’re all aware of the goats association with the sign Capricorn, but the sea-goat may be news to a few. The sea goat has the body of a goat from the waist up and the tail of fish. It’s a very unusual creature, even for mythical standards, because the two halves don’t seem to make a whole lot of sense together. Goats are designed to climb steep and rocky cliffs while fish are designed to move smoothly through the water. Neither half compliments the other. In fact, they almost make it a completely impossible creature altogether. (Source)

See where I’m going with this.

To simplify…

  • I’m constant but can be unpredictable.
  • I’m an introvert but with an extroverted exterior (I’m sure there’s a word for this).
  • I’m a planner but enjoy straying from plans (often) and just living in the moment.
  • I’m a deep thinker, yet impulsive with my words (this is something I’m continuously working to improve)
  • My mood changes like the weather.
  • I’m somewhat conservative but very carefree.
  • I’m firm in my beliefs, yet value and am open to learning and growing through others.
  • I usually have a serious demeanor but I am always down for some fun.

It’s important to note the term Capricious is not a negative one.

To be capricious doesn’t mean I’m undependable or inconsiderate. For me, it just describes my disposition. Many of my life-changing decisions are made in a very capricious manner.

For example, I literally woke up one day and decided I was going to move across the country with my daughter. With no discussion or thought of doing so before. Three months later I was living in Los Angeles, California.

After recently ending a long-distance relationship, I decided that I’d just continue to travel the world on my own and have some fun documenting it.

Okay, but what does all this have to do with starting a travel journal?

When things come to me (physically or spiritually) I don’t question it. No matter how crazy or erratic it may seem to someone else. (Like my life-changing first trip to New Orleans.)

And that is why I’m here, writing my first entry for my new travel journal. Not necessarily to make sense of it all, but just share my story. A story that is a little here, there and everywhere – but that’s the essence of me. Through all the confusion and uncertainties in life, I’m rooted in who I am and I’ve come to embrace the uniqueness of a Capricious being.

The very cool part of all of this is that my journey has allowed me to meet so many amazing people, who accept and love me for who I am (and all of my Capricious ways).

My path is one of self-discovery and trust me when I say sometimes I even surprise myself.

Care to join me on this worldly travel adventure?

I invite you to come along on this journey through my travels and hopefully, we’ll all make some sense of it together. At the core, I believe all of us have some capricious elements in us, sprinkling us with character.

I mean life would just be so boring if we didn’t, don’t you think?
